Solar for vehicle roofs

Compare real module envelopes and define roof, movement and charging questions before a mobile solar evaluation.

For Vehicle and RV manufacturers, Mobile-equipment integrators

Updated · Editorial method

For a mobile roof, compare supported usable area, mass and charging interfaces before choosing a module by rated watts. The listed 100 W, 240 W and 308 W modules have different shapes and voltages. None of those ratings establishes fit, roadworthiness or an energy contribution on a particular vehicle.

Build the brief
around the system.

Start with the application and interfaces. A product shortlist is a starting point for review.

  • Roof envelope and mounting
  • Solar module options
  • Charging and battery interface
  • Mechanical and electrical validation

Configuration to be confirmed. Agree on the configuration, responsibilities and evaluation criteria for your project. Candidate products and manufacturer data do not establish an independently validated complete system.

Screen the actual envelopes

308 W module1662 × 790 × 2 mm (±2 mm)4.1 kg ±0.2 kg43.81 V ±3%

These are manufacturer-stated module values, not installed-system dimensions or mass. Include supports, cable routing and service access in the roof envelope. A shared 2 mm profile does not establish the same permitted handling or bending conditions.

The roof drawing needs more than length and width

Mark roof shape, existing fittings, expected shading, support arrangement and areas that must stay accessible. Identify the cable exit and receiving electrical equipment. Ask which details require the vehicle/equipment team’s review before a sample is fitted.

For movement-related requirements, describe the actual equipment and operating conditions. Request the relevant mounting instructions and evidence; this page does not substitute a generic vibration, adhesive or weatherproofing assumption for them.

Match the charging system separately

The module’s maximum-power voltage is one input, not a complete controller compatibility test. Give the receiving controller/inverter and battery architecture, then request the characteristics and limits required for a model-specific review.

Keep energy estimates distinct from electrical compatibility. The JRC PVGIS manual illustrates the importance of location and exposure assumptions for defined PV calculations. A fixed-site estimate is not evidence of generation along a vehicle route or under changing parked shade.

Agree on a sample record

A useful review record ties the module and document revision to the proposed mounting arrangement, receiving electrical system and questions being evaluated. List what remains untested, and who accepts the mechanical, electrical and vehicle-specific work.

Start with solar module selection or custom solar OEM scoping. If the roof and controller are still undecided, say so in the enquiry; resolving those boundaries may be the next step before ordering samples.
